How to Increase the Value of Coconut Shell Charcoal to be Activated Carbon Part I

Coconut shell charcoal is commonly known as fuel for roasting fish or other food. Behind the blackness of coconut shell charcoal, it turns out to save the economic value is higher again.

Coconut shell that made charcoal can be increased its economic value by making it activated carbon. How to make activated carbon from the coconut shell is also relatively easier.

Activated carbon serves as a filter to purify water, gas purification, beverage industry, pharmaceuticals, catalysts, and various other uses. Coconut shell is one of the activated carbon materials whose quality is good enough to be activated carbon.

The shape and size, and quality of the coconut shell should be considered when making activated carbon. Coconut shell that will be used as an active carbon-making material, should form half or a quarter of the size of the shell.

If the size is too crushed, then the shell is less well used as an active carbon maker. In terms of quality, a qualified coconut shell used as an active carbon material is a really old coconut to its shiny black and hard color.

The shells used as the ingredients of activated carbon are generally of coconut that is copra. The resulting coconut shell is two parts from one whole coconut. To create a truly quality activated carbon, the shell should be clean and separate from its coir.

There are two stages of making quality activated carbon from the coconut shell. The first stage to do is a charcoal shell made with a covered drum kit.

The second stage, through the process of grinding charcoal shell to produce activated carbon and charcoal powder. This charcoal powder can still be processed into charcoal charcoal briquettes. Milling is done with a simple machine with electric, diesel, or gasoline.

The quality of the shell and the combustion process will greatly determine the yield of the activated carbon produced. The quality of the ordinary coconut shell is better than the hybrid coconut.

In order to obtain a better "rendement" of activated carbon, the steps of the combustion process by drum are given four holes at the bottom. In order for the combustion air to enter, the drum must be blocked with three pieces of brick.

Burning charcoal is done layer by layer of shell. Starting combustion can be by using paper or dried coconut leaves placed on top of one layer of shell at the base of the drum. After the first layer of the shell is burned, bit by bit one layer is placed above it. This step continues until the drum is full.

When the upper layer of the shell begins to burn, the bricks drum being slowly picked up, so the drum base directly touches the ground and closes the hole. Then the drum is closed tightly and do not let any incoming air.

If there is air coming in, the charcoal in the drum will become ash. But if the drum is closed tightly before the entire shell is burned, the shell will not become charcoal.

The next day, after the drums are cold, the lid is opened, then the drum is laid. The shell charcoal was then disassembled slowly. Charcoal that looks black, shiny, intact, hard, and easily broken shows good quality. Water content in coconut shell charcoal between 50-70 percent.
